Hamlin Robinson’s mission is dedicated to meeting the educational, social and emotional needs specific to students with dyslexia and related language difficulties. The sequential multi-sensory structure of the school’s program facilitates instruction in a broad range of disciplines:
Spelling and Language Arts As children develop automatic inter-sensory association of letters and sounds and internalize the processes involved, the units become larger – moving from letters to words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs, and finally, essays and reports.
Communication Children learn about the importance of eye contact, tone of voice, listening, observation and body language in communication. Conversational skills addressed include starting, continuing and ending a conversation, changing the topic and maintaining a topic.
Math Daily math instruction incorporates review, skill building, critical thinking, and problem solving while helping students understand the connection between math class and everyday life. Explorations and Applications, a program from consistent with the standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, provides the core curriculum for math instruction.
Science Dyslexic children learn about science most readily through active involvement rather then from textbooks. HRS provides a wide range of project oriented experiences for the children covering a variety of subjects.
Social Studies The social studies program aims to integrate practice in research, reading, and writing skills as students learn and express social studies knowledge. The goal is to foster a sense of curiosity, and awareness of the social and historical development of human cultures. Students develop respect for issues of social/emotional development, problem-solving and cooperation, tolerance and diversity.
Library The HRS library program is designed to help children develop a love of books. Students explore both literature and non-fiction materials, and learn how to use the library for fun as well as for research.
Technology Keyboarding skills, creating and saving documents, research skills and internet safety are incorporate into technology instruction at HRS. Mobile Mac carts containing MacBook computers are available for all teachers to use in their classrooms.
Music The music program at HRS capitalizes on dyslexic students’ strengths through singing, movement, playing instruments and performance. Children learn that music is a source of life-long enjoyment.
Art Developing a student’s self-confidence is the primary objective of the HRS art curriculum. It offers a venue for children to embrace their creative talents and learn new skills in a safe environment.
Physical Education Physical education at HRS engages students physically, socially, mentally and emotionally in a range of activities including individual and team sports and games. Students improve their skills as well as try new pursuits.
