Preparing for a Change

Changing schools or entering a new classroom environment can be exciting, but it can also create stress and anxiety for children. At Hamlin Robinson we work closely with families to make the transition as smooth as possible. Some ways in which you can help prepare your child include:

Discuss the upcoming changes
Children have active imaginations. By providing information about what is going to happen answers questions and reduces anxiety about the unknown.

Help your children visualize the change
Visiting HRS and touring the new classroom helps make the move more concrete. Take this opportunity to meet teachers and students so there are familiar faces when the big day comes.

Provide adequate preparation time
Giving a child time to get used to the idea of a new school is critical. Surprises only lead to greater uncertainty and concern.

Offer reassurance
Let your child know that you understand change can be hard and that you are there to offer support and love. Recall past changes and how well he or she handled them and express your confidence in your child.

There will be period of adjustment and grieving for the way things were. This is perfectly normal, and giving your child an opportunity to reminisce is part of the process. While this time can present many challenges, good things also come. Your family might grow closer and you may learn more about each other by going through it together.
