Through the use of linoleum cuts, collagraphy (the art of printing off of a collage), and Styrofoam plates, you will create your own unique and beautiful works of art. Prepare for a week of experiencing music. You will participate in drum circles using African Djembe drums, play Orff Xylophones, and perhaps play the guitar or ukulele in creation of a fun concert. Explore musical genres including Rock and Roll, Hip Hop, Jazz, Folk, and Classical. Family and friends will be invited to a concert at the end of the week. Crime Scene InvestigationInstructors: John Feather and Heather Patrick July 16-20 l 1 - 4 pm l Cost $135 Learn and apply the science of Crime Scene Investigation. As the detective, you will gather evidence, do fingerprinting, and perform fiber analysis. We will also explore some of the basic principles behind tracking. There is a wealth of undiscovered information to be gathered when you examine a scene closely. The week culminates in an investigation where you will be able to apply everything that you have learned. Art of ColorInstructor: Clay Blankenship July 16-20 l 9am-12pm l Cost $145 July 16-20 l 1 - 4 pm l Cost $145 This class is all about color and how to use it as you create art using a variety of different mediums. We will draw, paint, and even create a sculpture or two. Inspiration will be drawn from under the sea as we discover the world of clown fish, coral reefs, and sea gardens. Get read to make movies! Learn how to make Stop Action videos using a digital camera and computers. Bring your ideas and imagination. Use a digital camera to take a series of sequenced images that tell a story. Learn how to add audio, titles, and transitions. Explore adding special effects to top off your creative endeavor. Build your Own "Appalachian Dulcimer"Instructor: Kevin Williams July 23 - 27 l 1-4 pm l Cost $165 Ages 9+ Have you ever wondered how string instruments are made? Using kits from the Andy Mackie Music Foundation, you will learn how to build and play your very own “music stick,” which has its origins in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The instrument you build will have a diatonic fretboard (set up to play easily in one key) and you pluck the strings with a pick. Once we have built our Appalachian Dulcimers, we will learn to play traditional songs of the Appalachian Mountains, and be able to perform at the end of the week. This camp will take inspiration from fantastic stories, and bring them alive. Books such as “If the World Were a Village,” by David J. Smith and “Planting the Wild Garden,” by Kathryn O. Gabraith will be the starting points for building your own globe and working in the garden to plant and harvest food for your own snacks. Creativity and imagination are the basis of this fun week of great activities. This popular camp is a true blast! Explore and design as you make things fly. Be prepared to hone your rescue and recovery skills, because these paper planes and bottle rockets really do fly. Water and air will be used to propel your rockets. Whether you like ferocious lions or cute, cuddly kittens, this class will teach you tips and techniques for drawing any animal. In addition, we will paint and even create a sculpture or two. Have fun playing theater games and acting out your favorite stories on the stage. Explore character and plot development while learning how to use your voice and body effectively on stage along with some adaptation techniques to turn a story into an action-packed play. This class is led by Stone Soup Theater. Stone Soup Theater CraftsInstructor: Stone Soup Theater August 6-10 l 1 - 4 pm l Cost $145 Join the Stone Soup Theater and learn the art of mastering mask and Puppet Theater. Students will transform cereal boxes into masks and puppets in this colorful class. They will learn the techniques to manipulate them and create a dramatic story to perform with their new creations. Tae Kwon DoInstructor: Steve Coates August 6-10 l 9am - 4 pm l Cost $265 Learn the basics of Tae Kwon Do through the philosophy of positive reinforcement. This is the perfect physical activity for all students, both boys and girls. The camp will incorporate self defense strategies, fun activities, meditation, and exercises that benefit everyone. This program will help build confidence, promote the desire to learn, improve effort and motivation, and teach strategies for concentration and self discipline, while instilling respect for themselves and others.
