Testing

If a child is having difficulty in school, early identification of learning disabilities is essential for educators and parents to make the best decisions regarding appropriate educational needs. Students who are experiencing unexpected problems with learning to read and write should be referred to a diagnostician experienced with evaluating individuals with learning and/or language disabilities.

An individual evaluation may include the following:

  • A developmental, medical, behavioral, academic and family history
  • A measure of general intellectual functioning
  • Information on cognitive processing (language, memory, auditory processing, visual processing, reasoning and executive functioning)
  • Tests of specific oral language skills related to reading and writing, including tests of phonological processing
  • Educational tests to determine present levels of performance in basic skills of reading, writing, spelling and math
  • A classroom observation
  • A written report with a summary of the results and appropriate recommendations
