The HRS Program

The nature of the challenges faced by children with dyslexia requires that a great portion of the day – three or more hours – be spent on the basic skills of reading, writing, spelling, and expressive and receptive language. At the same time, their dyslexia gives students gifts, talents and abilities in right hemisphere skills such as mathematics, art, dramatics, music, and science. The HRS staff works to provide the necessary emphasis on language while offering other opportunities for growth, creativity and expression.

The school’s program is organized by grade level division and incorporates split-level groups, which allow for placement of children within two grade levels. Age, social needs, skills and ability are all taken into consideration when determining the appropriate placement for a student. HRS believes that students learn best when they trust that the classroom environment will be structured to meet their needs.

The Slingerland Approach to Language Arts provides the foundation for language instruction and other appropriate areas of the curriculum. This multi-sensory teaching approach is designed to help children with problems in the language areas – reading, writing, spelling and oral communication. HRS teachers are highly skilled and utilize innovative, effective strategies specifically aimed to help children with language learning challenges.
