Who Is It For?

If you have a child with difficulties learning to read, write or spell (often called a learning disability, dyslexia or Specific Language Disability), Hamlin Robinson School may be the right choice for your child's education.

Hamlin Robinson School seeks to admit students in grades one through eight with academic potential who have been identified with Dyslexia or related language difficulties (problems with acquisition of reading and/or written language), whose learning disability has prevented them from experiencing success in traditional programs.

Students are served in conventional classroom groupings. Children are placed by chronological age as often as possible, but an attempt is made to operate as an ungraded school.

The educational focus is on language arts and mathematics so that children may be prepared to return to conventional classrooms as soon as possible. The average length of stay at HRS is three years.

The Importance of Early Identification
Parents of learning challenged children must make an urgent priority of finding the appropriate learning environment. Early identification reduces damage to self-esteem and allows intervention before learning problems become too complex. Research indicates that early identification and intervention lead to more effective remediation in a shorter time.

Adult Class
Each year, HRS offers an adult education program that is intended to serve adults who may be experiencing difficulties with literacy skills. Adult students who meet the admissions criteria are enrolled in evening classes, meeting twice weekly, in the fall and winter. A qualified Slingerland teacher provides instruction in two-hour classes. Some homework is expected outside of class time. This program is appropriate for adults with average intelligence, high motivation and a GED or High School diploma (or permission of the instructor).

Enrollment includes a Slingerland Screening. Acceptance is contingent on the screening and/or permission of the instructor to ensure this is the appropriate program. Call the school office for more information.
