Assistant Head of School Job

Hamlin Robinson School, located in the North Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, is an independent, non-profit, accredited, state-approved, elementary and middle day school offering a comprehensive educational program to serve students with dyslexia and other language related difficulties. Reports to: Head of School

Job Classification: 12 month- exempt position


The Assistant Head of School is responsible for supporting the Head of School in leadership of the school, for all issues relating to the well-being of the students during their attendance at the school, and for family participation in the school community.



  • Act as Head of School in the Head’s absence and communicate with the Head about any special situations occurring at the school
  • Keep the Head of School fully informed on student issues and all other relevant matters pertaining to school life
  • Sustain and enhance the school’s climate and culture, involving faculty and families in support of the school’s mission, vision, and core values
  • Maintain an intellectual and social climate in which students are active partners with peers, faculty, and families
  • Work to produce smooth day to day internal operations
  • Articulate and promote the school’s mission and philosophy
  • Participate in the life of the school and establish a campus presence in order to retain a clear sense of the program and the overall climate

Classroom and Curriculum:

  • Maintain an active presence in the classrooms
  • Work closely with the Head of School in monitoring the academic climate of the school
  • Work closely with the Head of School and faculty in reviewing, researching, revising, and developing curriculum
  • Participate in the admissions process and assist with admission decisions, as needed
  • Oversee the scheduling of Parent-Teacher Conferences, to edit and proofread all student narratives and recommendations, and to maintain records and correspondence relating to Parent-Teacher Conferences
  • Proofread and edit the classroom biweekly letters and other classroom correspondence to families
  • Schedule programs and gatherings related to curriculum
  • Support the faculty and staff with student discipline and follow through with correspondence and/or related record-keeping
  • Assist the Head of School with developing summary reports on students’ progress, including standardized testing
  • Be knowledgeable of assessment materials and practices, and to plan and coordinate the school’s program of standardized testing for students
  • Maintain, inventory, and purchase materials for standardized testing
  • Oversee the school’s involvement with community service activities
  • Support the school’s strategic goal of documenting and sharing our curriculum and teaching practices with other schools


  • Help the Head of School supervise, support, and evaluate the performance of all the faculty and staff
  • Work with the faculty and staff to encourage professional growth and development, and to help them achieve optimal performance of their duties consistent with the mission of the school
  • Supervise the substitutes
  • Create job postings and outside advertisements for open faculty and staff positions, and to assist with the search and hiring for these positions

Family Involvement

  • Counsel families by working closely with the faculty and the Head of School


The ideal candidate will have most or all of the following qualifications and attributes. In addition, s/he must be able to adapt to a continually evolving environment and thrive in a deadline-oriented workplace. The ideal candidate will be collaborative, resilient, flexible, diplomatic, confident, patient, and possessed of a sense of humor and professional presence.

  • Master’s degree from an accredited educational institution.
  • Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit leadership. Ability to think strategically.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills.
  • Substantial knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Familiarity with current best practices in independent schools.
  • Ability to be flexible, balance priorities, schedules and meetings and meet hard deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently in a multi-tasking environment employing organizationally sound decision-making and flexibility.
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation and written communication skills facilitating work with all constituencies of the school community.
  • Enjoys being an active team member of an administrative team.
