Teachers are drawn to the Slingerland® Approach because it brings meaning and structure to the teaching of reading and writing. Many teachers report this course provides more information, strategies, and tools for effective instruction than any of their previous training.

Summer Training

Slingerland Summer Training Classes will take place on July 1 - 2 and 6 - 29 July from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. (There is no class on July 3.)

The Slingerland® Approach is a highly effective instructional method that makes core curriculum accessible to all students. Participants in the Slingerland® summer training classes learn to prepare and deliver structured reading and writing lessons using the Slingerland® Approach, which engages the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile pathways simultaneously to enhance student academic performance.

Training sessions include a hands-on teaching practicum and covers:

Oral language skills
Handwriting
Foundational writing skills
Phonemic awareness
Phonics and word recognition
Decoding
Reading fluency
Reading comprehension

CLASS INFORMATION

Introductory Comprehensive

The Introductory Comprehensive class is the core of the Slingerland® training program and includes a practicum with students. Topics covered include:

Structured lesson plan preparation using the Slingerland® Approach
Instruction, demonstration, and practice in implementing the steps for teaching handwriting, written expression, decoding, reading, and reading comprehension using the Slingerland® Approach
Introduction to the neurology of oral and written language
Understanding of the development of oral language skills
Introduction of phonics rules and their application to writing and reading
Understanding the causes and characteristics of dyslexia and other language-based learning differences
Study of the history, philosophy, and current research about dyslexia

Continuum Comprehensive

The Continuum Comprehensive class begins with a brief overview of Level 1 concepts before focusing on more advanced techniques in the language arts continuum. The use of dictation paragraphs and Slingerland screening procedures for identifying students will also be presented. Topics covered include:

Understanding the vertical and horizontal use of the Slingerland® format for daily instruction
Integration of new learning throughout the Slingerland® daily format
Administration and evaluation of Slingerland® screening materials to assess and understand a student’s language learning profile
Relating oral language skills to reading and writing
Instruction in critical thinking skills necessary for higher level reading, writing, and speaking
Guided observation and analysis of the diagnostic and prescriptive elements within the Slingerland® daily format
Study of current research in dyslexia

Continuum/Intern

The Continuum/Intern class is designed for participants wishing to become certified Instructors of Teachers through the Slingerland® Literacy Institute. This class encompasses all learning in the Introductory and Continuum Comprehensive classes as the intern/participant learns how to organize, maintain, and evaluate a summer training session, its students, and Level 1 training participants. Topics and activities include:

The use of the Slingerland® Approach with a class of students, including demonstration of Slingerland® procedures within a classroom setting
Guided preparation and delivery of lectures on a variety of aspects of the Slingerland® Approach for Slingerland® Level 1 training participants
Evaluation of lesson planning and material and teaching station preparation for Slingerland® Level 1 training participants
Evaluation of delivery and effectiveness of planned lessons for Slingerland® Level 1 training participants
Individualized requirements as assigned by the supervising Slingerland® Managing Director
