STRUCTURED LITERACY TUTORING WORKSHOP
Based in the science of reading, the HRS Learning Center’s Structured Literacy Tutoring Workshop provides a succinct but wide-ranging overview in using an explicit, systematic instructional approach to conduct a highly effective one-on-one or small group literacy lesson.
Course Description
This 8-hour, in-person workshop covers the basics necessary to conduct a 50-60-minute, one-on-one structured literacy tutoring lesson. The class will provide participants with background on and rationale for the efficacy of structured literacy practices. It will also provide direction in the practical application of structured literacy concepts and techniques into a comprehensive instructional session that includes oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, decoding, handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, written expression, reading fluency, and comprehension.

Course Objectives
- Understanding of the term “Science of Reading”
- Instruction in the foundational concepts of a structured literacy-based instructional approach
- Guidance in constructing and delivering an integrated, thorough, structured literacy-based lesson for individuals or small groups
- Introduction to and scope and sequence for teaching phonological awareness skills
- Introduction to and practice for an effective approach to teaching phonics and decoding
- Effective techniques and strategies for teaching handwriting, spelling, and written expression
- Effective instructional techniques for developing reading fluency
- Productive and effective strategies for developing reading comprehension
Learner Outcomes
- Understand the term “Science of Reading” and how it is applied to literacy instruction
- Familiarity with the principles of structured literacy instruction, as supported by research
- Understand how to plan and deliver a complete, structured literacy-based tutoring lesson
- Develop an understanding of the development of language skills for both oral and written expression
- Develop an understanding of the structure and organization of the English language and the application of phonics, orthography, and morphology to support accurate writing and reading
- Develop an understanding of using assessment tools and techniques to plan instruction effectively
