Empowering Early Readers
Through Literacy Quest, the HRS Learning Center is expanding access to literacy screening, dyslexia awareness, and educator training throughout King County.
Made possible through a community grant from Pitch Your Peers (Seattle), Literacy Quest provides free literacy screening opportunities for eligible students in grades K–5, along with training and resources that empower educators and families to better support struggling readers.
We are excited to offer this service free of charge based on grant funding because access to early identification and intervention should never depend on a family’s ability to navigate complex systems or afford private evaluations.
For Students & Families
The Literacy Quest program offers free STAR Early Literacy Screenings for eligible King County students in grades K–5. Available in both English and Spanish, STAR is a Washington state-approved screening tool that can help identify indicators of dyslexia and other reading challenges.
Screenings provide families with:
- Insight into a student’s literacy development
- Information about potential areas of concern
- Guidance on next steps, support options, and resources
- Opportunities for earlier intervention and support
Following the screening, families receive an individualized review of results and recommendations from trained HRS staff.
Students outside the K–5 range are also encouraged to reach out to discuss available support options.
For Educators
Literacy Quest also provides free and low-cost professional learning opportunities for educators interested in strengthening literacy support for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences.
Workshops may include:
- Understanding dyslexia and common indicators
- Using and interpreting literacy screening tools
- Supporting struggling readers in the classroom
- Building inclusive literacy practices
- Partnering effectively with families and caregivers
These trainings are designed to equip educators with practical tools, strategies, and confidence to better support diverse learners.

Screening inquiries for the 2025–2026 school year are currently closed. Families and educators are encouraged to submit an interest form to receive updates about screenings during the 2026-2027 school year, workshops, and Literacy Quest opportunities.
