The Science of Reading: What's Behind This Global Movement?
With Staci Bain, Ed.D
Thursday, March 23 at 6:30pm
Free virtual event
Many children across the U.S. are failing to achieve proficiency in the most fundamental component of education: LITERACY. Why is this happening when 50 years of worldwide research culminated in a preponderance of evidence showing how we can most effectively assess, teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes in reading? Join us as Dr. Staci Bain explores the Science of Reading and this global movement toward evidence-aligned reading instruction – including what is happening in Washington state.
HRS Learning Center Educator Workshop
The Impact of Language Variation on Literacy Development and Instruction
With Dr. Julie A. Washington
Saturday, April 1 at 9:00am
Cost: $150
This in-person, interactive workshop will focus on our current understanding of the potential impact of language variation on reading and assessment outcomes – particularly for African American children growing up in poverty.
- How is literacy learning impacted when the language of instruction differs from the language of the home?
- What is translanguaging and how does it impact teaching and learning in the classroom?
- How can we honor and affirm language variation while also moving children toward proficiency in the language of text?
- How can we build strong reading foundations that will lead to later reading proficiency?
